• Who are the doctors at Santa Monica Fertility Specialists (SMFS)?
Santa Monica Fertility Specialists (SMFS) is led by Dr. John Jain, a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist with over twenty-five years of academic and clinical experience. Dr. Jain completed his medical training at the University of Southern California, where he remained for nearly a decade on the Faculty of Medicine. He left that position to pursue his own vision of patient care: a practice that combines outstanding medical expertise, cutting-edge research, and respectful, individualized attention to the patient’s mental and physical well-being.
Dr. Jain is joined by Dr. Li Meng, a preeminent embryologist and molecular biologist, who serves as laboratory director for SMFS. Dr. Meng comes to SMFS from the Fertility Center at the New York University School of Medicine, where he most recently served as Supervisor of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Laboratories. His research on nuclear transfer and replacement of oocyte cytoplasm has won national recognition.
• What services are provided at SMFS?
We provide the most advanced reproductive medicine and fertility services available. Our full spectrum of treatments and fertility-related surgeries includes diagnostic testing, IVF, artificial insemination, tubal embryo transfer, egg freezing, and a range of other innovative procedures at the forefront of fertility research.
• What are your success rates?
Drs. Jain and Meng together have over thirty years of experience in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Their expertise is reflected in the success rates at SMFS, which are among the highest in the world.
Fertility practices are encouraged to report their success rates to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The results are published online and made available approximately two years after the information has been gathered. Because SMFS is a new practice, our pregnancy rates will not be published by the CDC until 2009. Therefore, until such time, we will provide our pregnancy success rates independently.

• What are the financial costs like?
There are no hidden costs at SMFS. We understand that decisions regarding treatment may be influenced by financial concerns and we are aware how much additional stress this can cause you. For this reason we want to emphasize our willingness to discuss these issues with you openly at any time prior to or during your treatment. Before you begin, we will explain in detail all potential charges so that you can make appropriate financial plans.
• What are the SMFS facilities like?
SMFS’s 7,200 square-foot medical facility include an andrology laboratory, an in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory, the Embryo ICUTM, and a state-licensed surgical center offering fertility-related procedures, as well as plastic and reconstructive surgery. Only the most sophisticated equipment available is in use at SMFS.
• What makes SMFS unique from other fertility centers?
We are unlike any other fertility center. Not only do we provide state-of-the-art fertility services, but we also offer an on-site mind/body wellness program because fertility treatments impact patients physically and emotionally. This program includes acupuncture, massage, and other complementary therapies proven to both significantly reduce the symptoms associated with stress and anxiety and to increase the likelihood of pregnancy and the birth of healthy babies.
SMFS is home to the Embryo ICUTM. Unlike most labs in which every embryo is grown under identical conditions, we individually monitor each embryo. We gather information on a daily basis and make adjustments accordingly, customizing the environment under which each embryo develops.
The expertise that SMFS can provide in the field of egg freezing is unmatched. Dr. Jain conducted the largest prospective egg freezing study in North America, yielding a pregnancy rate of 56% – the highest in the country. While at USC, he created the egg freezing program that is now part of our comprehensive fertility preservation program. We have worked closely with a team of cancer specialists to develop this truly life-changing resource for women diagnosed with cancer and facing sterilizing chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
